There were three hotels in old Milanovac:
"Nacional" on the spot where nowadays is the town
hall, "Srpski kralj" in the place of nowadays town
park, and hotel "Evropa" in Karadjordje's street
where today is the National Audit Office. However, "Nacional"
was the only real hotel because on the ground floor there
were rooms for accommodation. Hotel "Srpski kralj"
had half a dozen rooms.
Some of the buildings had their peculiarities
which made them different from the others. In taverns "Suvobor",
"Majdan", "Jasenica", "Gruza",
"Tri krune", "Domovina", "Oslobodjenje"
and "Devet Jugovica" went peasants, especially on
Fridays during the market days and during the fairs. Each
of these taverns had its own large yard and stables where
villagers parked their carts and housed bullocks. Worker called
"ardzija" took care about hygiene of stables and
yard. Dancing-parties were held in these taverns on Saturdays
during the winters, and they were organized for villagers
from the surrounding villages.
The tavern "Prolece" was the
first gambling house. Gamblers almost always occupied all
tables. District head and clerks who worked in county hall
frequented tavern "Dve vrbe". The elite in Milanovac:
doctors, professors, judges, teachers and other clerks, officers,
and wealthy citizens were guests in the hotel "Srpski
kralj". The tavern owned by Ivan Jovicic "Jovicica
basta" was the only tavern in Milanovac which had beautiful
garden with a lot of greenery, barbecue specialties and music.
"Kasina" was famous for its "matinees"
on Sundays where young people went to dancing-parties. The
tavern "Mandzurija" which opposite the hospital
employed young and beautiful women as prostitutes.
So called soup kitchens prepared and sold
food. They were all situated in Ljubicka street. Poor inhabitants
and workers ate there.
